Valentino’s POV “Come on, dickhead! We’re going to be late!”
Vincent, my fraternal brother, shouted from the living room of the pack house. I grunted in annoyance and finished getting dressed. I wasn’t one to splurge when it came to clothes or anything else.
I put on a grey long-sleeved shirt and black jeans. Mum would have liked me to dress more like an Alpha, seeing as I was about to take over. But I don’t agree.
Comfort takes precedence over everything else. “Valentine, seriously, come on. Or I’m leaving you.”
Vin slammed my door open and walked in with an attitude on his face. I growled at that stupid nickname he liked to call me. It annoyed me more than anything else.
We looked nothing alike. Apart from our common green eyes. I had my mother’s features, but my father’s Italian roots.
I had curly, tousled hair that was going every which way at the moment. I had big baby eyes and long eyelashes, which contrasted with my strong jaw and nose. It was a strange combination.
Vin had bright blonde hair, and it was as straight as any hair. His features were softer than mine. Which is strange, given that we’re Italian.
Vin was skinnier, I was more built and a few centimetres taller. I was 1.80 m tall, he was 1.80 m tall. “OK, I’m ready. Let’s go, damn it.”
I grabbed my rucksack and slipped it on. We raced down the stairs and headed for the front door. “Look at you, you look great.”
My sister, Victoria, teased us as we ran past her. “Bye, boys! Tino, behave yourself!”
Mum shouted, but we didn’t stop. Vin was adamant about being on time, he was the complete opposite of me. He was punctual, charming and intelligent.
I, on the other hand, wasn’t the best when it came to school or being charming. Most of the time, I kept to myself and had a temper. Quick to anger, as my mother says.
I don’t know where it comes from, but it’s there. I don’t know where it came from, but it’s there, always lurking in the back of my mind. We hadn’t met our mates yet, but we weren’t looking to do so either.
We’d been 18 for about two months, and neither of us had any idea of them. But now that there were lycans around… it was better not to. We would both be very aggressive to protect our companions.
I didn’t agree with Dad asking them for help against the thugs. We had one of the biggest packs in the world, we could look after ourselves. But he believes in reconciliation.
For as long as I can remember, there have always been tensions between lycans and werewolves. The lycans think they’re better than us, but they’re not. They’re not as big as they think.
My wolf, Zay, growled slightly at the thought of meeting a lycan at school. I’m sure a lot of them would be there, looking down on us. Sitting on their high horse.
Vin parked the car, I got out immediately and headed for the doors. The other members of the pack greeted us as we entered. I looked around and a big smile covered my face as I saw my future beta and best friend Quinton walking towards me.
“I interrupted him before he could continue. “Man, how many times do I have to tell you to stop calling me that? I’m not black.” Quinton laughed at my exasperation. He wraps his arm around me. “Yeah, but I am. So it’s no big deal. ” He shrugged and smirked as we both walked in. “You’re so boring.” “You love it.” As we walked down the corridors, we could already smell something different. It smelled lycan. And they didn’t smell good. They didn’t smell good at all. “It already smells like ass in here,” Quinton said. He always had a sharp tongue, sometimes too sharp. One day he was going to get beaten up. And I’d be right there with him. I’d kill whoever thought of touching my best friend in the first place. Just as I was about to react, a bundle of red hair rushed towards me and wrapped its arms around me. I looked down and was greeted by a pair of sparkling green eyes. “Hello.” She spoke and bent down on tiptoe to kiss me. Yes, I had a girlfriend. It’s not very conventional of me. My parents didn’t agree when I tried to introduce Dalia to them two years ago. They still haven’t met her. And they have no desire to meet her. Every Thursday, we have big family dinners, and I’ve tried to invite her several times, but my father and mother don’t agree. Only friends are allowed, apart from family and very close friends. It annoys me to no end. “I’ve already seen one. A lycan.” She spoke up, pulling me out of my thoughts. “Yeah, apparently there’s a teaching. Their alpha son.” said Quinton. I don’t know why, but it set Zay off. Maybe it was because there was another dominant male around and we were used to being the strongest. All I could do was pray to the Moon Goddess not to have him as a teacher. That would cause problems. “What’s your timetable? I want to know if we have a class together.” Dalia liked to be near me as much as she could, but I think it was because she was afraid I would leave her for my mate. And now that I was 18, that was a possibility. Although the idea of a companion was pleasant, it aroused great fear in me. Dalia knew some parts of me, but not everything. Because if she did, I’m sure she’d leave me. I have secrets, I have a past. I have this deep-seated anger and I don’t know where it comes from. But it’s there, always persistent. I looked at my timetable to see what I had and I was immediately faced with distress. Dalia took it from me and smiled as she read it. “We have almost every class together! Yay!” She jumped up and wrapped her arms around me. My eyes landed on Quinton, who had an amused smile on his face. “Yay! He laughed at Dalia and I rolled my eyes. “Who the hell is Mr Mickaya?” he asked, looking at his schedule and mine side by side. I don’t know why, but that name made me feel something. Something weird. Something I don’t like. “It must be the Lycan, we should go. It’s our first period.” Dalia spoke up, grabbed my hand and started pulling me down the corridor. God, I hated how clingy she was lately. Once in the classroom, this feeling of anxiety didn’t go away, in fact it got worse. Zay was pacing back and forth, which was slightly irritating. At the same time, Dalia was holding my hand and talking about something I wasn’t paying any attention to. She talked too much sometimes. Overstimulation is a bitch. What’s going on, Zay? I don’t know, there’s something… I just don’t know. Can you just calm down for a minute? You’re giving me a headache. Something’s happening. I can feel it. You feel it too. I growl in annoyance at his cryptic words. If he wasn’t prepared to give me a straight answer, then I wasn’t going to give him the time of day. The seconds ticked by and I looked at the clock: why hadn’t the bell rung yet? Where on earth is that teacher? A few moments later, my questions were answered. The bell rang and at the same time I felt as if the world had stopped. First I smelt something. It was peach and sea salt, it smelt like heaven. I had no idea where it was coming from, but it was driving Zay and me crazy. That’s when I saw him. He walked in with such confidence and self-assurance, head held high, looking forward. I hadn’t seen his face yet, but I knew he’d be magnificent. His body was a sight to behold. He was built, more than me, more than I could ever be. And his height dominated everything in the classroom. His hair was in a tight bun, it seemed to be curled at the ends, and it was pitch black. It was the darkest hair I’d ever seen. Zay was whimpering by now, begging the man to turn around. I wanted to see him. Just out of curiosity. For no other reason, of course. But when he turned around, I gasped. I’d never seen such a beautiful face, and I’d never seen such unique and beautiful eyes. They were two-tone, grey with a blue ring around them. I wanted to see them more closely, I’m sure I’d been missing something all this time. His eyes scanned all the faces, and I couldn’t wait for him to approach mine. And once our eyes met, everything became crystal clear. Mate Mate? Is it a man? A lycan? There’s no way… the goddess wouldn’t do that. Would she? We just stood there looking at each other. I wanted to know what he was thinking. I’m sure I looked crazy sitting there. My doe eyes must have looked huge, my cheeks heated with embarrassment. But he didn’t look troubled. As if I was nothing to look at. He immediately averted his eyes from mine and I felt cold. Zay let out a slight groan as he quickly dismissed us. Wasn’t I what he expected? I mean, I wasn’t expecting a man either. And I certainly wasn’t expecting my companion to be a lycan. And it’s not even like I wanted to be with him. But it would be nice to know if he’s attracted to me. It’s not weird at all. No, I think it’s a normal reaction. “Are you all right? Dalia whispers in my ear and rubs her hand over my arm. Suddenly, her touch felt like acid. It burned me. I slowly pulled away from her, nodded and looked ahead. My companion’s eyes were riveted on our entwined hands. I tried to pull away, but Dalia held me tightly. “My name is Koa Mickaya. I’m your new history teacher for the year.” That voice. Her bloody voice. I never thought a deep voice like hers would ever draw me in, but it did something to me. It was soft as velvet and warmed my body like hot chocolate. I loved it. What am I saying? No… no. I didn’t say that. Fuck that voice. But unfortunately I couldn’t stop the urge to say his name. “Koa,” I whispered to myself as quietly as my voice would allow. But I should have told myself that lycans’ hearing is twenty times better than that of werewolves. His eyes locked on mine again, but still nothing. No emotion in his eyes. He heard me. A girl raised her hand and caught his eye. I hate that girl. “Mr Mickaya, do you think we should introduce ourselves? I’d also like to get to know you better.” Was she flirting? Was it flirting? What the hell was that? No question of flirting. “Yes, of course, we can start with you. He waved and moved over to where he was now leaning against the desk. He was a very tall man… But I couldn’t concentrate on that, I could only concentrate on the gigantic feeling of jealousy that ran through me. Why the hell did he do that? Zay, calm down. No! He saw us. Why is he acting like he doesn’t see us? Like we’re not even here? Zay… Does he think we’re ugly? I can’t even smell his Lycan, he’s hiding from me. Zay let out a soft moan and I could feel his sadness. Maybe he didn’t want us. You know what, that’s fine with me. I don’t want him anyway. I really don’t. I’m not gay, and I’m an alpha. Alpha’s don’t get kicked in the ass anyway. I’m happy with Dalia. And at some point, my parents are going to have to accept the fact that Dalia is going to be the Luna. “You, in the grey. It’s your turn.” Her voice pulls me from my thoughts, I hadn’t even realised it was my turn. It went by so quickly. Or was I zoning out the whole time? “Uhh-yeah-uhh. My name is Valentino, I go by Tino. Son of Vincenzo and Maria Rossi. My favourite colour is orange. And my favourite thing is your mum’s jokes.” My voice faltered, I’d never stuttered in my life. There were a few laughs from my classmates at my joke, but not from HIM. He squinted, the only indication that he was looking at me. What’s going on? But as he watched me speak, I felt so compelled to speak well. I looked to see if maybe, just maybe, he would react. He didn’t react. His face was still cold. And distant. I knew what that meant. He was going to reject me. Zay let out a groan of pain, but didn’t protest. If his lycan didn’t reach out to him, then we knew it was a done deal. They didn’t want us. I didn’t want him either. And I’d prove it. “Thank you, Valentino.” The magic, the magic is real. Because it felt like it was spreading through my whole body when he said my name. I usually hate it when teachers say my full name, but when he said it… I felt… weird. He started talking about the history of lycans and werewolves. To be honest, I didn’t really care about the history of lycans, but it seemed relevant. And also the fact that he hadn’t looked at me once since he’d started teaching. But I didn’t care. Dalia still had her hands on me and she slowly leaned into my chest. I leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on her forehead. It was muscle memory, really. I didn’t realise what I was doing until afterwards and felt her icy gaze on me. My hair stood on end. I straightened up and turned to see his motionless, emotionless stare. “No PDA in this class, Mr Rossi and Mrs Crilo. Her voice was stern and her eyes didn’t leave Dalia, who immediately pulled away from me. She no longer touches me in any way. I breathed a sigh of relief. Dalia hated having problems with authority. “It’s my fault, teacher”. I hissed. The fact that he wasn’t paying attention to me annoyed me. His jaw tightened at the mention of that disrespectful name. One thing I knew about teachers was that they hated to be called ‘teacher’. I don’t know why. But instead of retorting, or indicating anything, he went back to his class. He went back to teaching. Ignoring me completely. Again. Zay was hurt, and so was I. Maybe he could tell I wasn’t good. Maybe I had an aura that showed all the damage I’d done. Yeah, that was it. That’s it, that’s it. I kept my head down for the rest of the class. It wasn’t like he cared if I looked at him anyway. It was weird how I felt. Rejected? Probably. As much as I hate to admit it. Once the bell rang, I couldn’t get out fast enough. I grabbed my bag and ran. I didn’t even wait for Dalia, I just needed to get out. Note to self: when you’re trying to run away from your partner, at least look where you’re going. I came up against a gigantic wall of men, and I knew who it was. I didn’t need to look. I could feel it. The heat, the electricity everyone talks about. I felt it. His giant hands held my biceps. Making them abnormally small. I kept my head down, refused to look at him. Besides, how embarrassing is it to have a man looking down on me? It had never happened before. I wasn’t ready for that. “I mumbled as I wriggled free of his grip and rushed out of the room. I was already a long way down the hall and finally felt like I could breathe. I walked to my locker and Vin was there, his back pressed up against them. He looked as dishevelled as me. Maybe even more so. His eyes were wild, like he was looking for me. Once I approached, he grabbed me and pushed me against the lockers, catching me off guard. “What’s your problem?” I hissed in pain as he stood in front of me. “We need to talk.” “Then talk, idiot.” I pushed him away and walked over to where I could open my locker and started putting my stuff in it. “I’ve met my mate. I found her.” God, I hated being a twin sometimes. I literally can’t have a unique experience of my own. I stayed silent because I knew his boring ass wasn’t done talking. “He’s a lycan…” AGAIN. I HATE BEING A TWIN. “Oh yeah? Welcome to the club.” I whispered and Vin looked surprised. “Your mate? Is she a lycan too?” Vin leaned forward and intruded on my personal space. He often did that when he was talking about something serious. “I wouldn’t say she.” My voice was low enough that no one could hear us, but Vin was being stupid. “A boy!” He shouted it so loudly that some people looked in our direction, and I felt my cheeks flush with embarrassment. “Shut the fuck up, moron,” I said through clenched teeth. The anger was welling up in my eyes, I’m sure. “Valentine, I didn’t know you were going that way.” “I don’t. And you’d better stop before I hit you.” He doesn’t help me. “All right, calm down. Let’s go, we have the rest of class together. And don’t think I won’t ask you about them later.” Oh, yes, I can’t wait. Goddess, help me.
